Some brands might have their own color codification but in general the automotive masking tape will be:

On top of the automotive masking tape, you will find the general use masking tapes and painters tape, the colors on these are:
- Beige - Economy contractor tape.
- Blue - Painter’s tape.
These tapes are designed for construction type paint jobs hence they will not bend as easy as the automotive ones.
The beige tape will leave extra adhesive residue on the surface while the blue has a lot less adhesive than automotive tape which might cause it to come of the surface before needed.
Additionally automotive tape has better temperature resisting characteristics that these tapes will not have.
CONCLUSIONS:
Along the years we have noticed that every customer has their own taste for the tape they use, it usually depends on the conditions they work and the type of work they do.
If you are new to automotive masking, we recommend you start in the middle with yellow tape you can't go wrong with this one. With time you might want to use orange/red tape if you plan to do quick unexpensive jobs where detail is not as important and if you don't really expect the tape to last too long on the car. Or use premium masking tape for expensive long-term jobs where every detail counts and you might need the tape to stay in place for an extended period of time.
